A wild Dinopithecus starts at 775 health and 100% melee damage. Its drag weight is 300, which decides what can carry it. Killing one gives 3 base XP.

Taming food: Exceptional Kibble, Raw Mutton, Raw Prime Meat, Cooked Lamb Chop, Cooked Prime Meat, Raw Prime Fish Meat, Raw Meat, Archelon Algae. Torpor drains at 0.3 per second once it is unconscious.

Breeding: gives birth to live young, and the baby matures in 3d 20h 35m . Mating cooldown runs 18h to 2d.

Immobilised by: Chain Bola, Large Bear Trap.

Drops on death: Raw Meat, Hide.

How You Get One

method, in order
Passive Passive, but only the pack alpha — after you have killed the rest of the troop and wounded it.

Step by step

  1. Find the alpha: the highest-level member, marked by a yellow-orange aura wafting off its back.
  2. Kill every other member of the troop, juveniles and babies included. None of them can be tamed by any means — the alpha is the only tame in the pack.
  3. Bring the alpha below 85% health.
  4. Put the food in the last slot of your hotbar and feed it. Kibble-grade food is effectively required — anything less makes the tame impractically slow.

Holding it still

Chain BolaFired from a Ballista or Harpoon Launcher. Grounds flyers and pins them where they land.
Large Bear TrapSame idea as the Bear Trap, sized for the big stuff. Bait it into walking over one.

That's the full list — nothing else immobilizes a Dinopithecus, per the game's own immobilizer table (drag weight 300).

Every number in this card is at official 1× rates, with the fastest food. Taming speed and food consumption multipliers change all of it, and most servers are not on official — the calculator at the top of this tab takes your rates, a Sanguine Elixir, and every other food this creature will eat.

Effectiveness is what decides the bonus levels: every unit of food eaten costs a slice of it, so the food that needs the fewest units finishes at the highest level. That is why kibble is worth the trouble — not that it is much faster, but that it is fewer feedings.

  • Melee Primary attack

The Dinopithecus hits or bites the target for 46 damage. If target is affected with Battlecry, an unridden Dinopithecus may deal only 25 damage once every 30 seconds, with a 10% chance to inflict Bleed. The bleed lasts 15 seconds and drains away 10% of health, ignoring armor and innate resistance. Does not affect bosses. Only stacks with Deinonychus' bleed attack. This attacks colletcs Feces from the ground.

  • Ground Slam Secondary attack

Slams the ground, sending a shockwave hitting up to 5 targets within 10 meters for 32 damage. Can be used while airborne. If it hits a Human with this attack, the damage completely ignores the player's armor, damaging their Health directly. This attack forces its targets to poop if they can.

The Dinopithecus throws a Grenade, Feces, or Infested Grenade (poop + grenade) from its inventory at a target. Pressing cycles the ammo: Feces, Grenades, or Infested Grenades. Tek Tier items like armor and weapons are temporarily disabled by the Feces and Infested Grenade ammo types. Feces hit the target for 10to be confirmed damage and afflicts Poop Hit: slows the target down by ?% for ? seconds, drains ? Health, applies Torpor, and negates healing fromConsumables. Grenades act as normal, apart from the fact they can't be cooked. They blow up when the fuse runs out. Infested Grenades combine the effects of both the previous ammo types, and stick to surfaces and enemies upon hitting. The resulting explosion afflicts Poop Hit: slows, damages, drains health, and prevents healing fromConsumables of any hit by it, including yourself.

  • Battlecry X +

The Alpha of the Pack performs a roar designating a target. The rest of the Pack (up to 9 other Dinopithecus) attacks the target specifically. Attacking Dinopithecus lacking riders may use the alternative Bite with a chance to induce Bleed.

  • Jump Jump

The Dinopithecus jumps. It can jump to a zipline and use it. Hold then release button for higher/longer jumps, improved distance while sprinting and climbing: can be used to leap long distances between climbing points, like redwood trees.

  • Pack Leader

The Pack Leader buff is obtained by the creature of the pack with the highest level, in the case of Dinopithecus there is one alpha for every 5 baboons. This buff increases the pack leader's Melee Damage by 25% and damage resistance by 12.5%. The Dinopithecus can be equipped with helmets for extra damage resistance. Oddly, sometimes helmets that are directly craftable from a Survivor's inventory (like cloth or leather) do not always degrade in durability when the Dinopithecus takes damage. What causes this is not known, but this is very convenient for long-term damage resistance. Any helmet however that requires either a Smithy or Fabricator to craft will degrade, but trade short lifespans for vastly more armor. The Dinopithecus usually poops more than one poop at the same time, and most of those cases the poops are from different sizes between medium and small. This helps keep the baboon stocked up on ammo even while on the move.

  • Fall Damage Immunity

The Dinopithecus is immune to fall damage, and so is the rider provided they stay mounted. Exceedingly useful, given the tame's impressive climbing and jumping abilities.
