How You Get One

method, in order
Passive Feed it Element and then survive what it turns into.

Step by step

  1. Use Element near a small Ferox. It eats it and transforms into its large form.
  2. Survive. The large form attacks you and hits hard for its size.
  3. When it shrinks back, use Element near it again. Repeat until tamed.

Also true

  • Torpor-immune, so there is no knockout route at all — the damage you take during the transformations is the cost of the tame.

Torpor

  • This creature is torpor-immune to conventional tranquilisers. Darts, arrows and Narcotics will not drop it, so the torpor figures elsewhere on this page describe its stat, not a route to taming it.

Holding it still

Chain BolaFired from a Ballista or Harpoon Launcher. Grounds flyers and pins them where they land.
Bear TrapPlace it, kite the creature over it. Holds long enough to get darts in.
Large Bear TrapSame idea as the Bear Trap, sized for the big stuff. Bait it into walking over one.
Plant Species YA grown trap plant — snares whatever triggers it. Handy where you can't place structures.

That's the full list — nothing else immobilizes a Ferox, per the game's own immobilizer table (drag weight 300).

Every number in this card is at official 1× rates, with the fastest food. Taming speed and food consumption multipliers change all of it, and most servers are not on official — the calculator at the top of this tab takes your rates, a Sanguine Elixir, and every other food this creature will eat.

Effectiveness is what decides the bonus levels: every unit of food eaten costs a slice of it, so the food that needs the fewest units finishes at the highest level. That is why kibble is worth the trouble — not that it is much faster, but that it is fewer feedings.

  • Shoulder Pet

While in Small form, the Ferox is a shoulder pet, meaning that it can be picked up and carried on the survivor's shoulder. From atop the survivor's shoulder, the Ferox is able to attack creatures within range, and it cannot take damage unless the survivor dies or throws the Ferox off their shoulder. While it is on the survivor's shoulder, the weight that the Ferox has in its inventory will weigh half as much to the survivor.

  • Dust Collector

While in Small form, either following on foot or riding on your shoulder, Ferox will occasionally make noises like sniffing and sneezing to indicate they've located Element Dust, similar to when Jerboa are forecasting the weather. If the Ferox is following on foot, it will automatically dig and collect the dust. If being carried on your shoulder, the Ferox needs to be thrown off, where it will proceed to dig and collect the dust regardless if it is set to follow or not. In both instances, the dust is added directly to your inventory, not the Ferox's. If the Ferox is not set to follow or being carried by a Survivor, Ferox left alone to their own devices will not collect any dust.

  • Transformation

The Ferox transforms into its Large form by consuming Element, which must be fed manually from the Survivor's action bar while looking at a Ferox within range, or while riding one. It cannot be force-fed any Element placed in its inventory, or consume any placed in Feeding Trough: it must be fed via the action bar. If you are riding a Ferox and another Ferox is on your shoulder, neither Ferox will be fed; you must dismount and look at the Ferox you intend to feed before using the element. If Element is slotted on your action bar, both wild and tamed Ferox (regardless of follow settings) will frantically approach you while hopping up and down, begging to be given a dose of Element. The transformation lifetime is 12 minutes by default without any addiction multiplier. Be warned that the Mate-Boosted buff does not cross the transformed barrier; you require two Ferox of the opposite gender to be in the same form in order to receive the buff (IE, a large, transformed female will not receive a mate boost from a small untransformed male, etc). Depleted stats are also restored by transforming (both transformations; into large, and back to small), IE: if a Ferox is missing Health, then transforming will restore it back to full. Clever Survivors can use this to quickly restore combat-Ferox back into fighting shape!

  • Addiction

The Ferox has an Addiction meter that influences several mechanics. Each time it consumes Element the meter increases 5% up to a maximum of 100% for 20 pieces of Element. The Addiction meter proportionally increases its Melee Damage, attack speed and damage resistance, but also decreases the transformation lifetime. With 100% on the Addiction meter the multipliers reach their top: +200% damage, +50% attack speed, +25% damage resistance and -3 minutes of transformation lifetime. When the Ferox reverts back to its small form, the % of Addiction it has will dictate how much Element it needs to transform again; maxing out at 5 pieces at high Addiction, only lowering in cost as its Addiction meter depletes. Additionally, in order to breed, Female Ferox require 95% Addiction or higher, though males require none. Both the Small and Large forms give the Insulation buff to the Survivor carrying or riding it, providing 225 Hypothermic and Hyperthermic insulation. Unlike the Otter, the insulation provided is a static set amount, and does not scale with the Melee Damage stat. The Insulation buff does however stack, both with other versions of itself and unnamed invisible insulation like the Otter's. For example, carrying a Ferox and riding a creature like an Amargasaurus, while wearing powered Tek Armor, will provide 3 different individual buffs of Insulation. Insulation however does not stack with identical versions of itself, IE: riding a transformed Ferox while carrying an untransformed Ferox on your shoulder will not grant you further Insulation, only 225. Likewise, some versions of Insulation have different values, such as the one provided by Basilosaurus, which has roughly double the value of the Ferox's. Both the Large and Small form of the Ferox can equip helmets in their saddle slot, providing extra damage resistance which can go beyond the strength of saddles most tames have, but at the cost of limited durability. The equipped helmet stays on and does not need to be re-equipped when the Ferox transforms, but unlike saddles; storing the Ferox in a Cryopod will cause the equipped helmet to drop on the ground, where it will need to be retrieved.
