Effectiveness is what decides the bonus levels: every unit of food eaten costs a slice of it, so the food that needs the fewest units finishes at the highest level. That is why kibble is worth the trouble — not that it is much faster, but that it is fewer feedings.
Torpor drains at 0.3 per second while it is unconscious, so on a long tame you will need Narcotic to keep it down. The calculator works out how much.

The Grand Tortugar is a simple knockout tame. Use a 
Longneck Rifle with 
Tranquilizer Darts or 
Shocking Tranquilizer Darts. Aim specifically for the head or soft underbelly. Avoid hitting the shell, as it has high damage resistance and will take significantly less torpor. You can also you can knock it out in the water or lure it to shore. Since it has no oxygen stat, it will not drown while unconscious.
For a safer taming method, you can use a simple 1x1 stone box trap or lure it into a small enclosure.

The Grand Tortugar closes or opens it's shell sides. Shell needs to be open to mount or dismount it, unless Grand Tortugar Platform Saddle is equipped. Can't be performed when equipped with Grand Tortugar Platform Saddle. Closing the shell protects riders from outside threats.

The Grand Tortugar alternates between swimming and walking underwater. The Grand Tortugar walks at 80% of its regular speed underwater.
- Rider Protection
Whenever the Grand Tortugar has its shell closed, its rider and passengers receive a lot of protections: The rider and passenger are immune to being dismounted. Including protection against being grabbed by other creatures. The rider and passenger cannot be damaged by most weaponry like
Flamethrower, explosives, 
Tek Rifle and 
Tek Turret splash damage or any projectile in general, they are also not a valid target for turrets that are configured to only shoot enemy players while they are inside Tortugar closed shell. The rider and passenger are immune to environmental damage like radiation, lava, swamp cave gas and spore damage. The rider and passenger gain 500 Hypothermic insulation. The rider and passenger will receive Grand Tortugar Oxygen buff, which recharges the Oxygen stat of the affected players. - Weight Reduction
