How You Get One

method, in order
Passive Tranquilisers do nothing. You let the bat grab you and it drinks the Blood Packs you're carrying.

Step by step

  1. Carry Blood Packs. They're the only thing it wants, and early on they come from supply crates or a Blood Extraction Syringe used on yourself.
  2. Let a wild Desmodus grab you. It drains packs out of your inventory while it holds you.
  3. Repeat until it's tamed.

Also true

  • Taming effectiveness starts lower than you'd expect. Having it grab and drop a high-health tame that is carrying the packs, or healing yourself with a Tek Phase Pistol, is how people reach 100%.
  • Tame a low level first if you have no Blood Pack supply — a tamed Desmodus is how you farm them for the next attempt.

Torpor

  • This creature is torpor-immune to conventional tranquilisers. Darts, arrows and Narcotics will not drop it, so the torpor figures elsewhere on this page describe its stat, not a route to taming it.

Holding it still

BolaThrow it, it's stuck for 30 seconds. Carry a stack — you'll miss.
Chain BolaFired from a Ballista or Harpoon Launcher. Grounds flyers and pins them where they land.
Bear TrapPlace it, kite the creature over it. Holds long enough to get darts in.
Large Bear TrapSame idea as the Bear Trap, sized for the big stuff. Bait it into walking over one.
Plant Species YA grown trap plant — snares whatever triggers it. Handy where you can't place structures.

That's the full list — nothing else immobilizes a Desmodus, per the game's own immobilizer table (drag weight 149).

Every number in this card is at official 1× rates, with the fastest food. Taming speed and food consumption multipliers change all of it, and most servers are not on official — the calculator at the top of this tab takes your rates, a Sanguine Elixir, and every other food this creature will eat.

Effectiveness is what decides the bonus levels: every unit of food eaten costs a slice of it, so the food that needs the fewest units finishes at the highest level. That is why kibble is worth the trouble — not that it is much faster, but that it is fewer feedings.

Active
  • Melee Primary attack

The Desmodus hits the target for 40 damage.

    5 stamina · 0.75s cooldown
  • Screech charge primary

The Desmodus blasts a scream, scaring the enemies away. Additionally, gives the affected targets Ecolocation debuff, which causes them to emit red waves around them revealing their positions. Lasts for 20 seconds. Damage is increased by 20% to revealed targets at night.

    100 stamina · 6s cooldown
  • Grab Secondary attack

The Desmodus grabs a smaller creature with its legs. While holding a victim, its health can be slowly stolen to heal the bat via the circle menu.

    40 stamina
  • Invisibility charge secondary

The Desmodus gets Camouflage, which makes the Desmodus invisible, preventing detection from all creatures (beside those that already have sensed it). This action is only available at night or while latching on a surface.

    5/s stamina
  • Latch Jump

The Desmodus latches onto a surface, suspending itself upside down on it. If the Desmodus can latch onto a surface, the text "Latching Available" will appear above the hotbar. Dismounting does not cancel the latch. The button must be pressed again while mounted.

  • Ascend X

    The Desmodus flies up.

  • Descend Special 1

    The Desmodus flies down.

Passive
  • Sanguivore

The Desmodus doesn't just harvest Blood Packs, it consumes them as well, and heals a portion of health every time it does. It cannot be rapidly force-fed blood packs, as a cool-down timer is triggered with each drink, but consumption is automatic, and with this it often recovers from injury much faster than most other tames, without the tedium of having to force-feed.

  • Aerial Acrobat

The Desmodus possesses abilities that set it apart from the average flyer. First and foremost, on official settings the Desmodus is the only flying creature able to be ridden and fly in caves. Secondly it has complete 3D movement in flight, able to maneuver in all directions, just like a Tapejara. Finally, If the Desmodus flies downwards with sprint active, it will start to dive and gain massive acceleration. This boost in speed keeps for a few seconds after the Desmodus levels out, though it lacks the continued momentum of a Griffin or Snow Owl, so it cannot chain dives efficiently with up and down swoops like they can. What the Desmodus lacks in momentum however, it makes up for in control; as it can be more easily steered in this state than the others.

  • Berserker

Whenever the Desmodus takes damage in flight, the cooldown period of its primary bite attack (0.75 seconds) is reset, which can be abused by a skilled rider to land rapidly repeating attacks, and heavily increase the DPS rate of the giant bat. Coupled with its ability to heal from Blood Packs, this makes Desmodus terrifyingly efficient killers of creatures that inflict recoil damage, like Kentrosaurus and Arthropluera. While inside caves or between the hours of dusk and dawn, night vision can be toggled on and off via the circle menu. When toggled on, the rider of the Desmodus will be able to see at night, although with a heavy red tint. Unlike Night Vision Goggles, the screen does not brighten harshly as the light level gets higher. Living creatures are also a brighter red in contrast to the environment, making them them easy to pick out from the terrain, very similar to the thermal vision of the Snow Owl. While the Owl's thermal vision can be activated at any time of day, unlike the owl's version, the Desmodus' night vision does not consume stamina while active. Night vision will automatically turn off at dawn's light, or when exiting caves, and you will have to wait until nightfall or the next time you go spelunking to use it again.

Passive

The Desmodus produces Blood Packs in its inventory when more than 50 damage is dealt to an enemy target. It can also obtain some Blood Packs from creatures that it has grabbed while flying; producing 1 blood pack every ~5 seconds the victim is held, while slowly draining their Health in the process (This function can be toggled on and off from the circle menu). The Desmodus also harvests Spoiled Meat whenever it consumes corpses, however, it cannot harvest anything else than Blood Packs, Spoiled Meat, and Raw Meat from bodies. This makes it a very poor option for farming any other resource that comes from corpses.

While wearing its saddle, the Desmodus is the only source of Sanguine Elixir, which can be made from a crafting option in its inventory using 200 Blood Packs. If placed in a slot of your hotbar, the elixir can be used from the hotbar to boost taming or imprinting progress by 30% (once per creature).
